What do heart healthy foods do for you?
Food for a healthy heart provides a variety of vitamins, minerals, micro- and macro-nutrients to your body. Nutritional research links heart health with Omega-3 fatty acids, phytoestrogens, antioxidants, and other substances.
Antioxidants benefit heart health by reducing oxidative damage to cells and tissue. Some of the best-known antioxidant foods include those high in beta carotene, vitamin C, and vitamin E.
These nutrients occcur naturally in most high fiber foods. Beta carotene in foods like carrots, tomatoes, and watermelon, converts to vitamin A when consumed. Berries, especially blueberries, provide excellent amounts of both vitamins C and E, as well as other vitamins and minerals.
All heart healthy diet plans include foods that stimulate antioxidant activity — But you should know antioxidants are good for more than heart health :
These same healthy foods promote good health and are especially helpful for weight loss, too.
The food with the highest antioxidant content will stimulate your appetite, and can enhance what's on your plate. But they may not make the best foundation for a balanced diet (since most are spices and sweets)! Look instead for which antioxidant foods you can eat every day.
