Must
High Fiber Foods be Organic ?

Maybe not!

Some high fiber foods are less likely to absorb pesticide and fertilizer contaminates from the soil, water, or air. Others are more at risk.

Not all fiber filled foods have the same risk for contamination:

What does the Organic Certification mean?

Organic certification ensures production methods used to produce food follow a specific set of regulations. The actual regulations to which a farm or food processor must comply vary, depending on product origin and target market. (See the United States standards).

In general, for high fiber foods to be certified as organic, the food crop must be raised without use of most conventional pesticide treatments, and grown in an area free of petroleum or sludge-based fertilizers.

So…    No chemicals.    No petroleum.
Gee! Before the 20th century, farms naturally produced organic food crops. Smart. Satisfying. Simple.

The goal of organic certification is to produce healthy food crops to supply healthful nutrition for our own good health.

A worthy goal in our modern environment. But this certification is costly, and many farmers do not have the time and money needed to complete the process.

Many farms produce quality food crops using agricultural practices that exceed organic regulations. But when the farm cannot afford organic certification, the very healthy and healthful foods they provide to markets cannot show the official organic label.

Such products sometimes identify their source as sustainable, alternate farming, beyond organic, or holistic. Words to tell us these conventional foods were grown in a clean, healthy environment and processed with safe handling.

Are organic foods healthier?

Organic foods may lower you exposure to pesticide and other possible chemical contaminates. But all foods high in fiber provide your body with great nutrition, whether grown organically or conventionally.

However, you may taste more flavor in organically grown fruits and vegetables.

You may also notice when you eat more organic food, your energy level goes up and weight goes down. But those benefits could have more to do with additional fiber in your diet, than with food production methods.

Science remains unclear whether organic food really does provide more or better nutrition. But research does agree that consuming fresh, whole, plant-based food is good for a person's health.

How important is organic food in your high fiber diet?

The foods most important to be organic are more likely those without fiber.

Fiber foods, even when grown conventionally, provide great nutrition. To consume organic foods can only protect against added exposure to pesticide and unhealthy fertilizers.

Animal-based foods like meat, eggs, milk, and cheese can pass along more dangerous effects: added antibiotics, hormones, genetically modified organisms, along with pesticide and many other chemical contaminates.
